Sáile began in our kitchen, in the West of Ireland, one wet winter’s afternoon. Our family like food and like to experiment with different ingredients. The children had friends over and they were all hungry. We made some traditional soda bread, and Rachel added some dilisk seaweed that she had wanted to use for ages. The children were fascinated with the purple streaks in the bread and finished the loaf! This got us thinking – maybe we could add seaweed to other dishes. And so, the idea for Sáile Irish Seaweed Foods began.
We have always tried to feed our children well, often with sneaky, healthy ingredients added to give extra nutrition. Healthy eating can often be difficult, especially when people are working and life is busy. It can be time-consuming to cook everything from scratch, or even to have all of the ingredients in stock when you want to bake a nutritious snack. With Sáile, we set about developing foods that would incorporate the nutritional benefits of seaweed, and which would taste great to adults and children alike. Importantly, we decided that our products would be quick and easy to make. After much trial and error, numerous tastings and lots of research, we have come up with four recipes that our whole family like…we hope you like them too!
