We have been very fortunate over the last few weeks to have done quite a few tastings around Galway and Clare. It is very interesting to see the different reactions from customers at the idea of eating seaweed as an ingredient in a snack food or as a treat. Many people have been surprised that they like the taste of the products as they have convinced themselves that they could never eat anything with seaweed. Other people are already aware of the health benefits of eating organically, using natural ingredients and of adding seaweed to your diet, and have been embracing our products!
Interestingly the same themes are arising at each tasting. Firstly, many people are extremely conscious of how much sugar they are consuming. The message is definitely spreading that we all need to reduce our sugar intake. At Sáile, we don’t use refined sugar and prefer to use coconut sugar and dried fruit to sweeten our products.
Secondly, lots of parents (especially mothers, it has to be said!), are looking for healthy snacks for lunchboxes. Our Kelp Oaties have been extremely popular for this, as they are also nut free. Adults are also looking for healthy snacks so I have been recommending the Synergy Balls as an alternative to chocolate biscuits!
Lastly, it has been really lovely to chat with some older people, especially those from Connemara, about their memories and experience of eating seaweed while growing up. Many have spoken to us about eating carrageen as a cure for colds or to help a bad chest. Others have told us about snacking on dilisk. Most of these older people were delighted to see our Chocolate Carrageen Mousse and enjoyed tasting it.
Our next tasting is at Healing Harvest in Kinvara on 7th October and in Supervalu Oranmore on 8th October. Hope to see some of you then!
